U.S. Census Bureau data reveals the population of Americans age 65 and older continues rising, while numbers for the population under 18 have dropped. From 2020 to 2024, the 65-and-older group grew by 13%, compared to a 1.7% decrease for those under age 18. The country’s older adult population has climbed sharply over the past century, from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million as of 2024.
Research from 2021 estimates that about half of older adults—approximately 28 million people—will require long-term services and support, with more than a third expected to need nursing home care at some point.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an organization focused on insurance education. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
