The City of Orlando will dedicate the baseball field at the John H. Jackson Neighborhood Center to honor Jackie Robinson, a key figure in baseball history. The event is scheduled for Friday, January 30, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., and will include the unveiling of a commemorative sign.
District 5 City Commissioner Shan Rose and the Families, Parks and Recreation Department are organizing the ceremony. The dedication recognizes Jackie Robinson’s impact on Major League Baseball as he broke the color barrier and used his influence to promote equality and opportunity.
“In 1949, the Jackie Robinson All-Stars played the Orlando All-Stars at Carter Street Park, now the John H. Jackson Neighborhood Center, bringing Negro League stars to the community and giving local fans the chance to see their favorites compete in person. The park served as a central gathering place for Orlando’s Black community and a stage for historic moments in the game,” according to city officials.
The site was significant in Orlando’s Black history as it hosted events that brought together residents and provided opportunities to witness notable athletes.
“This dedication marks Jackie Robinson’s first appearance in Orlando at Carter Street Park and honors the site’s significance in Orlando’s Black history,” city representatives stated.
Media attending can park at 1002 West Carter Street, where an attendant will be present. Those planning to cover the event should RSVP by Thursday, January 29, 2026, by contacting Ashley Papagni, Public Information Manager for the City of Orlando.
