ORLANDO, FL — Today, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost (FL-10) released a statement slamming a Flagler County elementary school’s decision to single out Black fourth and fifth-grade students for an assembly on low test scores, which, according to reports, included a presentation on how students with higher grades have a higher chance of going to college, while those with lower grades have a higher chance of going to jail, getting shot, or getting killed.
Black students were pulled from their classrooms for the presentation, regardless of their grades and test scores, while all other students remained in their regularly scheduled classes.
In a statement, Rep. Frost says:
“Alongside parents and families in Flagler County and across our state, I share outrage over the explicit targeting of Black students under the guise of low-test scores.
“The fact that school employees felt empowered enough to discriminate based on race in a public school underscores just how far Florida has fallen when it comes to providing a good quality education free of racism and prejudice.
“If this was truly about test scores, the school in question would have approached all students and parents about what can be done to help those children succeed. Instead, the school chose to round up Black kids, regardless of their grades and test scores, for a racially motivated presentation meant to ‘scare them straight.’
“This is racism, it’s wrong, and it has no place in Florida. I am calling for immediate accountability and action from the school district to ensure this does not happen again.”
