WHAT:
On Friday, July 29th Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 3 City Commissioner Robert F. Stuart will work-along with city workers and contractors to help finish construction of the latest pedestrian safety improvement project in Orlando. They will be working on the installation of a new mid-block crosswalk on Corrine Drive in the city’s popular Audubon Park Gardens Main Street District.
Mayor Dyer will don construction safety gear and be hoisted up 15 feet with the help of a bucket truck to install signage on the new pedestrian signal mast arm that suspends over the roadway. Mayor Dyer, together with Commissioner Stuart, will also help install the crossing equipment pedestal.
The new signalized crosswalk will help residents and visitors to the area cross the roadway safely and more easily. With plans for decorative markings, curb extensions and the addition of a new pedestrian refuge island, the project helps further support the City’s Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2040.
The project is also part of the Complete Streets vision for the Corrine Drive corridor that the community, together with the city, Orange County, Winter Park and MetroPlan, developed in 2019 to transition the roadway from a thoroughfare to a true complete street designed for people, pedestrians, bicyclists and not just for cars.
In January of this year, the City of Orlando took ownership of Corrine Drive, Virginia Avenue and Forest Drive, allowing for investment and improvements recommend from the study, like this crosswalk, to be made. In addition to this new crosswalk, the city completed an interim resurfacing project on Virginia Drive between Portland Avenue and North Fern Creek Avenue in April 2022. The project included improvements to the westbound lanes, traffic signal updates, improved crosswalks for the North Fern Creek intersection, and a wheelchair ramp.
