The City of Orlando has launched its annual Street Tree Program, which provides free street tree planting for eligible homeowners within city limits. The program is available from June 1 through August 31, and residents can request a free tree to be planted along their streets during the winter season.

According to the City of Orlando, “The City of Orlando is proud to announce the summer launch of its annual Street Tree Program, offering free street tree planting for eligible homeowners within city limits. Running from June 1 through August 31, this program invites residents to request a free tree to be planted along their streets during the following winter season.”

Trees are seen as important for cooling neighborhoods, lowering utility bills, reducing flooding risk, and helping prevent heat-related illnesses. The city says that the Street Tree Program is part of efforts to increase urban canopy and improve quality of life for people across Orlando.

Homeowners must live within the City of Orlando limits to qualify for the program. Each household may submit one application per property online at orlando.gov/streettrees. Applicants will be contacted regarding their request status after submission.

The process includes inspection by city crews at proposed planting sites. They determine suitable locations and species based on space available, underground utilities, and compliance with the city’s Right Tree, Right Place policy. Approved trees are planted by city workers during winter months. Homeowners are responsible for watering and maintaining their new trees.

The city offers various species tailored for different spaces and conditions, including small, medium, and large trees. Availability depends on seasonal supply. Choices range from shade-providing oaks and maples to ornamental trees suitable for areas with power lines or limited space.
