Honoring the past - pressing towards the future
On Sunday, our nation celebrated Juneteenth to recognize the end of slavery in the United States, dating back to June 19, 1865.
Commemorating Juneteenth gives us the opportunity to share as a community our pride in civil rights progress, but also recognize that the struggle for equity still exists and our collective work to uplift and create a more inclusive country must continue.
On Saturday, at our inaugural Juneteenth Celebration at Lake Lorna Doone Park, we honored Dr. Alzo Reddick with the first Juneteenth Champion Award in recognition of his work to further progress, equality, equity, and inclusion.
