Veterans Day Proclamation
Every November 11, our nation pauses to give thanks to the Americans who’ve sacrificed so much to serve our country. On Veterans Day, we come together to celebrate and honor those who’ve served in the United States Armed Forces.
GENERAL ITEMS
Commissioner Gray Birthday
We would like to start off today by wishing Commissioner Gray a Happy Birthday which was on Sunday, November 6. In traditional fashion, let’s all sing happy birthday.
Midterm Election Voting
Tomorrow is Election Day. If you haven’t voted yet, please take time tomorrow to visit your polling place.
There are so many important races and amendments on the ballot. You can help shape our state and our region’s future by voting and having your voice heard at the ballot box.
Hurricane Final Debris Pass
As new updates emerge, we are working with our emergency management staff to continue to keep our eye on Subtropical Storm Nicole. We are encouraging residents and businesses to make preparations now and stay informed.
We want to take a moment to recognize our city staff who will be wrapping up debris collection next week. This was much sooner than the 60-day anticipated time frame. Hurricane Ian left us with more than 75,000 cubic yards of vegetative debris... That is enough to cover a football field to the top of the goalposts. So far, our crews have collected more than 90 percent of it. Restoring our city remains a team effort. Thank you for your continued hard work.
Holocaust Founder Passing
Lastly, on behalf of the entire City Council, we want to send our condolences to the family and friends of Tess Wise, who passed away late last month at age 99.
Tess escaped a Nazi labor camp as a teenager and dedicated herself to fighting antisemitism and hatred. She later founded the Holocaust Center in our community. Her memory and impact will live on for future generations, especially in Orlando as we continue our efforts to create an inclusive, welcoming city for all.
ITEMS OF NOTE
Housing #6-10 Homelessness Funding (ESG)
Moving on to items of note, there are a number of items on the agenda we want to highlight that allow us to leverage federal funds to help our community.
This includes five funding agreements totaling more than $170,000 to help our partner agencies care for some of our most vulnerable neighbors including those experiencing homelessness.
We are grateful to these partners for helping advance our shared priority that every resident has a safe place to sleep, and their basic needs of clothing, food and hygiene are met, including:
Christian Service Center for Central Florida
Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida
Harbor House of Central Florida
The Salvation Army
And SALT Outreach
