Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer joined residents and community partners to kick off Bike to Work Day in celebration of Florida Bike Month on Friday, March 22, 2024. The event aimed to promote alternative sustainable commuting options and highlight the city's commitment to biking infrastructure.
Mayor Dyer led the group ride at 8 a.m., guiding participants through downtown Orlando and concluding at Orlando City Hall. Along the route on Orange Avenue, riders were able to admire the city’s newly installed intersection murals and artistic curb extensions designed to enhance safety and placemaking in the downtown area. Additionally, e-bikes and pedicabs were provided for those who wished to join the ride but did not have a bike.
After the ride, a post-ride celebration and award presentation took place, allowing residents to learn more about the city’s bike projects and connect with local biking organizations and resources.
The event, sponsored by various organizations including Bird, Lime, and SunRail, showcased Orlando's efforts to become a more bike-friendly city. Since 2003, Mayor Dyer has spearheaded initiatives to improve connectivity through projects like the Orlando Bicycle Beltway and the Downtown Loop. Orlando currently boasts over 360 miles of urban trails and lanes dedicated to biking, with a significant portion of them off-street.
