Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer has announced a Special Election for District 5 Interim City Commissioner set to take place on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. This decision comes after Governor DeSantis issued an Executive Order suspending District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill from office.
According to the Orlando City Charter, Mayor Dyer is obligated to call for a Special Election to temporarily fill the vacant District 5 Orlando City Commission seat. The newly elected official will serve until the resolution of Hill's criminal case or the end of the term.
District 5 residents interested in running for the Interim City Commissioner position can obtain further information on the election process by visiting orlando.gov/election or contacting the City Clerk’s Office at cityclerk@orlando.gov. Candidates are also required to file initial paperwork, including the Notice of Intent to Collect Petitions with the City Clerk’s Office.
In addition to the election date on May 21, 2024, key dates include the qualifying period from April 8, 2024, to April 16, 2024, and the commencement of early voting on May 13, 2024. In the event of a Run-Off Election, early voting will begin on June 10, 2024, with the election day scheduled for June 18, 2024.
