The City Council meeting on June 24, 2024, featured several notable recognitions and updates.
Human Resources Director Ana Palenzuela discussed the Dennis McNamara Employee of the Year Awards, which honor city staff for their exceptional service. The awards highlight the positive impact these employees have on the community.
Allen Johnson and Charles Leone from Orlando Venues paid tribute to Ollie Rives, who is retiring after 32 and a half years of service to the City of Orlando.
Congressman Darren Soto, representing much of southeast Orlando, attended the meeting to announce a new federal appropriation for the city. Congressman Soto has been an advocate for Orlando's needs in Washington D.C.
Earlier in the day, District 5 Interim City Commissioner Shaniqua “Shan” Rose was sworn in during an Oath of Office ceremony. The council welcomed her and expressed eagerness to collaborate on future projects and programs.
An update was provided on the Pulse Memorial Advisory Committee following the city's hosting of the 8th annual Pulse Remembrance events on June 12. These events included the CommUNITY Rainbow Run, which had 2,000 participants and raised $55,000 toward a permanent memorial. The advisory committee aims to conceptualize a design for a memorial by year-end. Over 150 applications were received from diverse community members, with consultants set to recommend approximately 10-15 committee members by early July. Meetings will be accessible to the public both virtually and in-person.
The council also announced that the 47th annual Fireworks at the Fountain show will take place on July 4 at Lake Eola Park from 4 to 10 p.m., featuring live entertainment and family-friendly activities culminating in a fireworks display at 9:10 p.m.
Additionally, it was noted that Commissioner Sheehan will celebrate her birthday on July 6.
