The City of Orlando has announced the opening of a cooling center in partnership with the First United Methodist Church of Orlando (FUMCO) to provide relief from extreme heat. This initiative aims to offer a safe environment for vulnerable populations, particularly those without shelter, who face significant health risks such as dehydration and heat stroke during heatwaves.
"With temperatures expected to remain high in coming weeks," the city stated, "the cooling center will provide relief and a safe environment for vulnerable populations who face unique challenges during heatwaves." The cooling center will be located at FUMCO, 142 East Jackson Street, and will operate from July 15 through September on days when the heat index is anticipated to exceed 103 degrees.
Operating hours for the cooling center are from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday through Friday. Visitors will have access to an air-conditioned space, restrooms, disability access, seating areas, and drinking water. Additionally, Downtown Ambassadors will be active in the community providing water and informing those needing shelter about the extreme heat conditions and the location of the cooling center.
"The city is committed to enhancing everyone’s quality of life through proactive measures like the cooling center initiative," said a city representative. This effort underscores Orlando's dedication to ensuring the safety and comfort of all residents during challenging weather periods.
