Orange County Government, Florida issued the following announcement on April 4.
Surplus Lots Used to Create Affordable Homes in Holden Heights
Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings and Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando & Osceola County President & CEO Catherine Steck McManus held a groundbreaking ceremony in the Holden Heights neighborhood on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, to celebrate their combined efforts to provide Central Floridians with affordable opportunities to become homeowners.
With the creation of Orange County Government’s Housing for All 10-Year Action Plan and its Affordable Housing Trust Fund, Orange County has identified opportunities within its real estate holdings to transform land into affordable housing options for residents. Five surplus lots were identified as part of this review. In total, Habitat for Humanity will build 19 homes in Holden Heights.
“Our dedicated housing staff has left no stone unturned. This is an example of a successful public, private and philanthropic partnership,” said Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings. “The donation of these surplus lots is another way Orange County can contribute to the affordable housing solution.”
The future homes consist of three floorplans, including two 3-bedroom and one 4-bedroom layouts, each includes two baths and outdoor storage closets, starting at $200,000. Additionally, there is a down payment assistance program available for potential homeowners who qualify and participate in the homeownership program.
“Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando & Osceola County is driven by the belief that everyone deserves a safe and affordable home,” said Steck McManus. “I would like to thank Orange County Government and Mayor Demings for not only sharing this vision, but helping us continue to make it a reality.”
The project is expected to be completed over the next two years. Habitat for Humanity is currently accepting applications from Central Florida residents aspiring to become homeowners.
