Peter Pihos of Orlando died August 16, 2011

Peter Louis Pihos, born in Orlando, Florida, on October 22, 1923, died August 16, 2011, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, from complications related to Alzheimer’s disease. He played college football at Indiana University, earning multiple All-American honors and serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. Pihos was a key player for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1947 to 1955, helping them win NFL championships in 1948 and 1949. He was selected six times to the Pro Bowl and inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. After retiring as a player, he coached at several institutions and minor league teams. His roots in Orlando marked the start of a career that influenced professional football. Pihos’ legacy includes his records, honors, and the connection to Orlando as his birthplace and early home.
