The University of Central Florida women’s tennis team advanced to the Big 12 Tournament semifinals after defeating Brigham Young University, 4-2, on April 16 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
The victory allows UCF, ranked No. 20 nationally, to continue its postseason run following a Big 12 regular-season title. The Knights have now won six consecutive matches and extended their home winning streak at the USTA National Campus to 21 straight.
UCF started strong by capturing the doubles point with wins from Olivia Bergler and Lauren Seye on court two (6-3), and Jantje Tilbuerger and Marina Gatell on court one (6-4). The third doubles match was left unfinished as the Knights had already secured the point. In singles play, Bergler put UCF ahead with a straight-set win before BYU tied the match by taking victories on courts four and five. Seye regained momentum for UCF with a tiebreak win on court six.
In decisive third sets, both Gatell and Tilbuerger fought back after dropping their opening sets. Ultimately, Gatell clinched the overall victory for UCF with a comeback win (5-7, 6-3, 6-4), marking her sixth dual-match clinch of the season.
Next up for UCF is a semifinal matchup against Arizona on April 17 at the same venue. Arizona is one of only two teams that defeated UCF during conference play this season.
