Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, alongside local youth and business owners, is actively involved in the City’s Summer Youth Employment Program. The initiative aims to inspire young professionals and cultivate growth for a thriving local workforce at no cost to businesses.

Eric McIntosh, a former participant in the program who now owns Sweetie’s Ice Cream, shared how the Youth Employment Program helped him develop his skills and build his business. He expressed his enthusiasm for giving back to the community by providing on-the-job experience and opportunities for young residents.

Mayor Dyer will join students at Sweetie’s Ice Cream on April 2, 2024, to serve frozen treats and discuss how businesses can partner with the program to support the city's efforts in creating a more equitable community. Kaylee Johnson, another program participant, will also share her personal story about how the program has impacted her while working at Sweetie’s Ice Cream.

Annually, the Summer Youth Employment Program employs over 600 teenagers aged 15-19, providing them with financial literacy training, job experience, networking skills, and career readiness. Participants work in various career fields such as retail, hospitality, and the insurance industry, all while receiving an hourly salary from CareerSource Central Florida.

The event is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at Sweetie’s Ice Cream located at 212 South Orange Blossom Trail. For those interested in applying to the program, opportunities and resources can be found at orlando.gov/summeryouthemployment.

Parking for media personnel at the event location is limited, and reservations can be made by contacting Ashley Papagni at 321.418.9361 or ashley.papagni@orlando.gov by 12 p.m. on April 1.
