The City of Orlando, in collaboration with OUC—The Reliable One, is set to initiate the Summerlin Avenue Improvement Project in January 2025. This initiative aims to upgrade essential infrastructure between South Street and Marks Street. The project will focus on modernizing OUC's potable water system and the City of Orlando's sanitary sewer and stormwater systems. The improvements are expected to enhance service reliability, streamline safety systems, and improve residents' quality of life.

Starting Monday, January 13, 2025, contractor Gibbs and Register will begin replacing nearly 80-year-old infrastructure. The work involves installing approximately 1.25 miles of new water mains, adding fire hydrants, and updating critical valves to boost fire safety and system dependability.

In addition to utility upgrades, the project includes complete roadway restoration, enhanced pedestrian safety measures, and improved streetscapes. Roadway reconstruction will involve reinstating brick pavers or asphalt paving. Pedestrian safety enhancements will include new signals at strategic intersections along with crosswalk and curb ramp replacements for ADA compliance. The project also involves sod replacement and tree removal for a cohesive streetscape.

Construction is scheduled primarily from Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with completion anticipated by Spring/Summer 2028. Work areas include the intersection of East Robinson Street and Summerlin Avenue as well as sections along Summerlin Avenue up to Marks Street Intersection.

Temporary traffic disruptions are expected as work progresses in two-block sections along the route. A full intersection closure at East Robinson Street and Summerlin Avenue will occur for three months at the project's start.
