Early on November 1, a shooting in downtown Orlando resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to several others. The Orlando Police Department swiftly apprehended the suspect, preventing further escalation.
In response to this incident, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer declared a local state of emergency effective immediately. This order requires businesses in the downtown entertainment area to cease alcohol sales at midnight and imposes a curfew from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.
"This local state of emergency will end Friday, November 8, 2024, at 5 p.m." stated Mayor Dyer. He emphasized that while there will be impacts on businesses and residents within the area, "the safety of every person who lives, works, and visits our downtown is our top priority."
The curfew restricts all individuals from being outdoors in vehicles or on foot within the Downtown Entertainment Area during these hours unless exceptions apply.
